There are currently 8 states that do not allow an atheist to hold public office. WTF?!?!?! George Bush has vetoed 3 bills while in office, 2 of which deal with stem cell research. His basis for why he vetoed the bills was due to the fact that he felt this type of stem cell research was morally wrong. His morals are determined from his religious upbringing from child hood and his current religious beliefs. This is a HUGE violation of church and state. I do not believe any religious person is capable of leaving God at the door and making decisions based on the good of the people. This is why I believe anyone who runs or holds public office should be an atheist or at least denounce their religious beliefs every time they enter their office. I know that sounds pretty extreme but it is the only way to guarantee that the people most offended by this statement will have the freedom to practice whatever religion they choose. In order to continue to live in a free society we can not allow religion to play any role in the legislative process in the U.S. Website / Blog: Jweaver Occupation: Student |

I am a 20 year old student at San Diego State University. I can not read or learn enough about sustainability or sustainable design! I changed my major last semester from Business (Entrepreneurship) to Environmental Engineering. I plan on double majoring with a degree in Environmental science as well. After I graduate, 2011 I hope, I plan on attending law school. I am fascinated with the law, frankly I do not see how everyone is not, seeing as how it determines how we live our lives. I really love school, however SDSU has done an amazing job of treating students like "customers" instead of students. Every day I try to find the answer to a question or problem I find on campus and every day I am told by the faculty and staff of our school that it is because our school is run like a business. Maybe I am living in a dream world but I believe a school should be run like an educational institution instead of like a business. I hope people will begin to see the value of education and sustainable design. I plan on using a law degree to work with "sustainable businesses" to start a "green" economy, one that is profitable for Americans, and even more so for the environment. The true benefit of such a revolution would not be the hundreds of trillions of dollars in revenue, but the sustainable changes to our countries infrastructures which will guarantee we are leaving the smallest carbon footprint behind for the future generations to come. Right now I am working on a few things at SDSU and would love to hear some suggestions of how to get them accomplished because I have hit a wall with each one. I proposed a $25 increase in yearly student fees, to give unlimited public transportation (San Diego bus or trolley) to all students, faculty, and staff of SDSU. With the $40 subsidy the school allready provides for each s tudent willing to purchase a parking pass, the entire investment in MTS would also establish more services throughout the city of San Diego. It would also set an example to the rest of the country showing that the use of Public transportation should be encouraged. The reason I was given to why this could not happen was due to the fact that the school recently entered into a huge loan in order to build multiple parking structures around campus. They now have to sell multiple passes for each spot just to pay off these loans. I am also working on changing our schools policy regarding energy consumption. Since SDSU has it's own power facility they have taken the stance that it is beneficial to leave every light in every building on all night long. The only reasoning behind this is that it is cheaper for them to leave them on rather than have the janitor turn them on and off in every classroom. For the school to say they don't care about our energy consumption because they do not have a utility bill is ludicrous. I have formed a group of students that went floor to floor turning off every light for 2 weeks. We can no longer do this with such a small group of students so we are trying to raise a $100 to print off 1 thousand copies of a sign that says "It doesn't make sense to leave your house with the lights on, why do it at school? If you are one of the last ones to leave this room please help our school conserve energy by turning off the lights. Do not worry, the next person to enter the room will turn them on. =) Thanks for your help!" This sign will be super glues to the front and back of every single door in the school. I am also working on creating a chalking policy. Currently any student can chalk on campus grounds however the school pays $1500 to clean up a 10x10 area of chalk. Do to California environmental safety standards we have to hire someone that willclean the chalk without washing the it into a drain. This requires a special boom, and oftern times a pressure washer. In order to avoid high clean up costs, all the school would have to do is create a policy that would require students to obtain free chalk from the Associated students office, and fill out a form of what and where they would be chalking. This would allow faster clean up and would not limit free speech because students can chalk any noncommercial speech they choose on campus grounds. |
