Timothy Rood is an urban planner and architect with experience in transportation, land use, and regional planning and policy, as well as architecture and urban design. His work and research covers the full range from building design to regional transportation and land use studies.

Past projects have involved regional transportation and land use projects; new towns and master planned communities in the United States and the Middle East; transit-oriented, mixed-use neighborhoods, and transit station areas; Specific Plans; public policy and program design for the implementation of smart growth and the New Urbanism; and a variety of building architecture, including multifamily housing, commercial, and historic preservation projects. Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, he spent two months in Louisiana leading the coordination effort with FEMA and state and Federal agencies for Louisiana Speaks, the long-term regional recovery plan being developed by the State of Louisiana.

Mr. Rood’s foundation in planning and design stems from extensive academic and work experience in an array of interrelated fields. He has lectured widely, testified to the California State Senate as an expert witness on alternative transportation, and is on the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, where he teaches an urban design studio. At U.C. Berkeley’s Institute of Urban and Regional Development, he co-authored a study of job accessibility with Professor Robert Cervero. He practiced architecture for six years, specializing in historic building rehabilitation and multifamily housing, before joining Calthorpe Associates. At that firm he worked as a project manager and principal, leading numerous design and policy projects, and leading community design workshops to develop “opportunity site” plans as part of several regional planning processes.

Mr. Rood joined CD+A as a partner in July, 2006. His firm will be reviewing pilot projects for LEED-ND, the new rating system for green neighborhoods developed by the US Green Building Council, Congress for the New Urbanism, and the National Resources Defense Council.

Tim bikes to work, takes the bus when it rains, buys groceries on foot, and is constantly looking for ways to make cities and suburbs greener.
