This week the L.A. Times reported that several Hollywood A-Listers, including Steven Spielberg, Charlize Theron, and Jake Gyllenhaal, have reinvented the art of the arrival by showing up at meetings and events in an environmentally-smart car owned by Eco-limo, "a limousine service that combines privilege with environmentalism." Also among the clientele is Beverly Hills businessman Steve Miller, who told the paper, "I love my Hummer, but this balances out my life." While his heart is near the right place, speculation abounds that Miller enjoys a light salad for lunch and follows it with a triple-decker-fudge sundae topped with fried cheese for dessert.
After the Golden Globes on Monday night, many of the entertainment industry's hottest stars will be partying green. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sarah Jessica Parker, Eva Longoria, and many more will be attending a celebration at 9900 Wilshire in Beverly Hills—formerly the site of a Robinsons-May store that is now being converted into an eco-friendly apartment building. Among the "green" elements of the event are organic foods, recycled party decorations, and, of course, the envy Golden Globe winners feel for Oscar winners.
Hollywood eco-hero Ed Begley Jr. recently gave an interview to Grist.org in which he discusses his new television show Living With Ed, a reality program about the challenges he faces in striving for a greener home and the challenges his wife faces in striving for a normal-ish life. Begley also discusses several environmental side-projects and the conversation is inspiringly upbeat. In fact, some scientists believe, if properly channeled, Begley's optimism could provide natural light for millions of homes across the nation.
The Governator has ordered a dramatic cut in vehicular greenhouse gas emissions in the state of California. Although Arnold has confused many by accepting gifts from oil giants and keeping a collection of Earth-destroying vehicles in his garage while he introduces radical green legislation, political analysts predict he'll enjoy continued success in office as long as he doesn't outlaw enigmatic and contradictory behavior.
While most celebrities would benefit immensely from ownership of a hybrid, Paris Hilton tops the list this week. The air-headed heiress ran out of gas multiple times, relying on help from the papparazzi to finally get going. Those close to the situation are still arguing over whether it was an unfortunate stroke of bad luck or a hilarious cosmic metaphor for the state of Hilton's career.
