What's the dumbest thing you could do if you were at an event to promote environmental awareness? Much to the dismay of Orlando Bloom, Kate Bosworth learned the hard way at The Fuji Rock Festival, sponsored by Global Cool. No, she didn't execute a baby whale. She dropped a cigarette butt and other litter on the ground without thinking twice. Bloom reportedly lashed out at his ladyfriend, pointing out that Bosworth's actions were antithetical to the entire purpose of going to the concert. Kate supposedly responded, "Nobody saw. I don't know what your problem is," not realizing that passersby did indeed see. Unfortunately, it appears that Bosworth is more interested in changing her nose than her bad habits.
Malcolm Gladwell, noted genius and author of The Tipping Point and Blink, recently spoke up on cleaner alternatives to oil dependency. His father, it seems, installed a geothermal heating/cooling system (who among us hasn't?) and Gladwell was impressed with lack of toxicity and pollution involved with the process. He wrote, "One of the frustrating things about... our dependence on imported oil is the persistent notion that real solutions will require some future technological breakthrough. I think we have a lot of the answers. We just haven't made consumers, and public officials aware of them." While there's little doubt that consumers would demand change if present with simple alternatives, some public officials seem to like things just as they are.
Famed British Footballer Sol Campbell, a multi-millionaire known previously for "hob-nobbing" about on private jets, making television cameos, and nasty paternity questions, may be moving on from the pitch. So what might the future hold? Campbell has said he's interested in the environment, design, and fashion. Maybe he can bring more awareness in the UK to eco-friendly clothing. And then maybe Dido or Martina Hingis, friends of Campbell, can spread that awareness across the pond. Because, let's face it... this is the first time you've ever heard of Sol Campbell, isn't it?
USA Today featured an opinionated article celebrating the greatness of Willie Nelson this week, as the music legend prepares for a benefit concert to raise money for farmers. The article praises Nelson as the voice of mainstream Americans and a level-headed environmentalist, pointing out that he has his own biofuel brand (anybody else think it should be called, "Willie Juice?"). We have to wonder, though, if the most likable man in America is peddling biofuel, what does it take for some people to stop with the SUVs?
It's pregnancy month here at LIME, and there's no shortage of celebrity news in that department. Among the recently pregnant or new moms are Maggie Gyllenhaal, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Rachel Weiss. Many environmentalists rightfully view population growth as a huge problem, but nothing scares us more than one particular woman making good on her word. ...Baby, one more time? We hope not.
