A growing number of companies are developing bioplastics, eager to replace an oil-based production method with one that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize toxic waste, and promote rural economic development.
There are current products out there that use PLA's (polylactic acids) which are extracted from corn and turned into clear plastic. They are 100% biodegradable. A company called Biota sells water in bottles made of PLA and BioBag now sells food wrap. WIld Oats and Wal-Mart even use PLA clamshell containers for their packaged deli, produce and bakery products.
