The U.S. Department of Energy announced Wednesday that it will invest up to $385 million in six cellulosic ethanol plants that will produce fuel from the non-food part of crops, such as wood chips, corn stalks, and switchgrass.
I recently read about the President's trip to visit one of the plants and though I think it is a little too late for him, it is not too late for the country. I will watch with baited breath to see if this all goes through, but this seems to be one of the most ambitious initiatives of late. Ethanol is very promising, but farming it does not seem like a realistic goal that we can achieve because of the amount needed. I hope we continue to make positive steps forward.
