The federal government has authorized a study that could yield an Energy Star–type program for server equipment: The average computer data center uses enough electricity to power 2,500 homes, and there are as many as 28 million facilities now in operation.
I work in a 150,000 square foot datacenter. The power consumption is amazing. Costs are always scrutinized and power is a significant one. I am seeing more energy efficient servers coming in all the time.
Being that technology is moving so fast, a server is obsolete before 5 years is up. I believe the natural attrition of servers with the newer power saving technology will naturally help this issue. Power costs are a very significant cost of doing business and considered in the purchase process.
