Amid America's rush to replace gasoline with homegrown alternatives like corn-based ethanol, some researchers worry that the results may benefit motorists at the expense of higher food costs and fewer US crop exports.
The USDA has done extensive research on the benefits of using products other than corn for the production of ethanol. We are growing our hybrid pearl millet here in Middle Georgia and many farmers are eagerly coming by to see our crop. Small farmers have been encouraged to not farm for so many years that it would be great to see this land used for a worthwhile cause. It would be a great way to get farming back in the hands of the small farmer, and help with the energy crisis. We plan to raise our millet, harvest it, ferment it and distill it for our cars and equipment. Isn't that the good old American way to handle a problem? Millet is drought resistant, attracts wildlife and furnishes food for animals. In Africa and India millet is grown for a food product.
Sounds like you guys are trying to make a change one farm at a time...keep up the good work.
