Who would’ve thunk it. Prime Minister Tony Blair and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, meeting in Long Beach, Ca., announced this week that they’ve forged an agreement to work collaboratively against global warming. While the import of the agreement is not fully clear—and while some critics derided it as a “symbolic gesture”—it nevertheless adds momentum to a movement already underway.
The Ford Motor Company came under attack in the blogging world last week, for seemingly trying to have its cake and eat it too - or, more accurately, for trying to emit its carbon and appear to be doing something to stop global warming. Back in April, Ford signed a deal with TerraPass, a carbon offset provider, to give Ford buyers a chance to offset their emissions by purchasing a TerraPass with their car. The trouble is, Ford is a contributor to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, which produced those ridiculous global warming denial ads that everyone's been up in arms over for weeks.
Ford announced yesterday that it was offering five-year, interest-free loans on its Escape Hybrid after seeing a double-digit sales jump in a month-long trial run of the deal in Washington, D.C. and California.
While the 36-mpg-averaging Escape Hybrid is no Prius, Ford's willingness to forego a chunk of profit (financing is one of Ford's major revenue sources) and Americans' interest in jumping on the hybrid bandwagon are promising signs: 1,441 Escape Hybrids were sold in March alone.
Ford, longtime maker of Mustang sports cars, has taken an interest in another kind of mustang: the wild ones. The company raised more than $200,000 to help save wild horses from the slaughterhouse, where many of them could end up as a result of federal policies. The money will go to animal rescue groups to buy the horses and provide for their long-term care.
