The Truth About Protein

The truth is the Standard American's Diet (SAD) contains too much protein from animal sources and not enough from plant-based sources such as beans, legumes, nuts, seeds and vegetables.



Spicy White Bean Dip and Baked Pita Chips

15-ounce can cannelloni beans, drained and rinsed

1 small shallot, roughly chopped

juice of ½ lemon

2 tablespoons nonfat Greek-style yogurt, such as Total

1 ½ teaspoon cumin

¼ teasoon cayenne

1 tablespoon fresh cilantro leaves, minced

salt and pepper

In a food processor, combine cannelloni beans, shallot, lemon juice and yogurt, puree until smooth. Add cumin, cayenne and cilantro, pulse to combine. Add salt and pepper to taste, add more seasonings if needed. Garnish with more minced cilantro leaves, if desired. Serve with pita chips, below.

But a recent Dutch study suggests that you could boost your metabolism and burn more calories around the clock simply by eating more lean protein. The study's participants, all women who were already at a healthy weight, found that increasing their protein intake to 30% of their daily calories enabled them to feel more satisfied and less hungry while consuming fewer calories than they would on a more typical diet consisting of about 10% protein.
