It turns out mom was wrong. It's better for your back to slouch, rather than sit up straight.
When it comes to the numerous discomforts that often accompany pregnancy, acupuncture is a supreme multitasker. From conception to every day life with baby, the ancient Chinese system of healing can treat many of the most common aches and pains.
Hospitals are catching on. Slowly. A recent study from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found that patients with lower back pain experienced less discomfort when given a combination of conventional and CAM treatments than with conventional treatment alone.
“Mention posture, and people conjure antiquated images of stiff-backed children with books balanced on their heads,” writes Catherine Saint Louis in this week’s Thursday Styles section of The New York Times. “But today there is a new focus on standing tall that is less a matter of etiquette than a strategy for keeping aging bodies supple and pain free.”
