According to the World Bank, more than 20 percent of the world’s population lives on less than one US dollar per day. In some parts of the world, such as Africa, the percentages are much higher. Giving money to the poor is one possible solution, but after many years without positive results, most experts are concluding that it’s not viable long-term. Instead, worldwide attention is being focused on the practice of “microlending” – small loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries – as a way to break the poverty cycle. In fact, the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006 was awarded to Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank for their pioneering work in the field. Find out more about microlending and how it works in the Grameen Bank in this interview with Bart Victor, the Cal Turner Professor of Leadership at the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University.
