Geoffrey Ballard, founder of Ballard Power, has an Ethical Markets discussion on how China, Mayalasia, and other developing countries are slowly beginning to enjoy the same standards of living as the West. He also examines the potential environmental loss that would occur if a large percentage of these populations became car owners.

Ethical Markets is a weekly half-hour financial lifestyle magazine TV series redefining success through a positive look at what is possible. Real examples of people, companies and organizations illustrate the “triple bottom line;” respecting people and the environment while earning a profit.

I can not imagine why you are showing the film with Geoffrey Ballard. His comments were extremely misleading and this information is not helpful to the cause of sustaining live on planet earth. It is not about China and India and any "new" market for fossil fuel. It is about the lack of viable alternatives because people will want what they want, and it is not their issue [yet or ever] to decide how they get it. Maybe someone your message department forgot to finish the clip....yes?

My 2 cents

Ballard's comments may have been a bit misleading, but I think the point he made was that we are setting an example for the rest of the world.  We are seen as having every luxury at our finger tips and he was right, people are human and they want conveniences.  US citizens use more fossil fuels than anyone else on the planet and I think we need a wake up call and to step up to the plate and help out mother nature before the damage we've caused becomes irreversible.

Back to basics
by Vicki_R on February 2, 2007 - 8:01pm
If you have seen the report that came out of Paris today on Climate Warming, you will realize that we do not need more people using fossil fuel and contributing to the already problematic atmosphere.  That is the point I think he is trying to make.  We need to change what we are doing in the Western world to show that what we are doing isn't necessarily working.  In a way, these countries are doing more for the environment than we are.  Getting back to basics may be the answer and they may already have it.
