Green Gifts for Everybody You Know... and a Few People You Don't
Posted by LIME Team on December 19, 2006 - 5:37am.
The Eco-Slacker
by Amanda Leigh Haag
Your friends care about the environment. Really. They were down with recycling and water conservation before being "green" went mainstream and became the stuff of moral conscience and pop-cultural infatuation. But frankly, everything has its limits. They're not about to take the bus to work. They're not going to give up their energy-gluttonous, giant, flat-screen, high-def TV. And composting is pushing it. Here are a few ideas for them.

Green For Beginners
Sometimes it just takes getting started. Try giving this green gift starter kit from GoGreenGift, which contains two compact fluorescent light bulbs (which will save hundreds of pounds of CO2 emissions every year over regular bulbs), a low-flow showerhead (which cuts down on water waste by about 20 percent), high quality organic fair trade coffee and organic green tea, a handful of natural body care products (including Mama's Magic Myrrh Salve), an organic cotton grocery bag, a copy of E/The Environmental Magazine, and more. The GoGreenGift is an evolving idea, so gift contents may vary somewhat.

Cost: $45

A Lighter Carbon Footprint
For the loved one who wants to indulge in the everyday conveniences of a modern lifestyle, consider giving carbon offsets from NativeEnergy. You can buy credits in any dollar amount, and your money will fund renewable energy projects such as wind farms, use of biomass, and industrial efficiency.

Gift: Carbon Offsetting Credits From NativeEnergy
Cost: Variable
Where to Buy: NativeEnergy

Friendly Fire
It might not do much to warm the home, but the contemplative holiday scenes and the life-like crackle of the Ambient Fire: Ultimate Video Fireplace will still draw a crowd to gather around the, ahem, television. Wood-burning appliances and fireplaces are known to emit large quantities of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, so you can cozy up to this faux fire with a clean conscience.

Gift: Ambient Fire: The Ultimate Video Fireplace
Cost: Video $12
Where to Buy: Amazon

The Solar Charged Bag
This solar-charged, mobile power generator in the Voltaic solar backpack allows your laziest friends to juice up all of your small electrical devices (cell phones, cameras, PDAs, but NOT laptops!) by means of three lightweight, waterproof solar panels. A lithium ion battery pack is included and allows for storage of surplus energy, so your friend will be like a walking power socket whether at the beach or on an airplane.

Gift: The Voltaic Backpack
Cost: $288

Love the Green Gift Guide
by IanTurvill on December 4, 2006 - 10:54pm

I love your online green gift guide "Giving Gone Green".

In fact, I love it so much, I've added it as the featured article on my blog at: http://healthygreenblog.typepad.com.

As I noted in my posting, what is particularly appealing about your collection of green gifts is that they have segmented it according to the recipient's potential attitudes towards "things green".

Where else could one find in a single place gifts for the "Eco-Slacker", "The Style Maven", or "The Foodie", plus many others?

Nice job, Lime Team.

If you're into natural and alternative fiber clothing, check out Doie Designs (www.doiedesigns.com) fabulous collection of silk and bamboo women's wear. It's a new company, but quickly growing. The clothes are high quality, stylish and comfortable, plus they won't break your budget. I've been surprised by the absence of mention in all the press surrounding green apparel companies this year! The designer was actually featured on Lime.com several months ago

Happy holidays,

Has anyone tried one of these? I saw this on HGTV awhile ago and have really really wanted one. I am a poor social worker though, so I have been hesitant to spend that much money. Anyone have experience using one of these?

Never too late to be a novice
by feebe3 on September 8, 2007 - 2:32pm
I've just started recycling with all of my heart, but I'm finding it a bit difficult. My local community's recycling flyer has a lot of items missing from it that I though were recyclable. Anyone know of a really good book or article on this website that will help kick-start my all-over the home recycling efforts?

I love the guide and I had
by johannabartley on December 15, 2008 - 9:31am
I love the guide and I had no idea there are so many green practical things. There should be more baby gifts in there as children should learn from a small age that we need to take care of mother nature.

These would make great promotional products for special events, you don't always go for pens and tshirts because people are always interested in challenging new desings. This article just gave me a great idea.
