Green Gifts for Everybody You Know... and a Few People You Don't

The Busy Parent
By Belinda Miller

Kid on hip, baby in stroller, cell phone in hand negotiating dinner/sitter/birthday party plans, the busy parent considers an uninterrupted bathroom experience practically a vacation. Having happily chosen the chaos of parenthood, even the busiest parents have time to miss the serenity of the pre-child days. Lend a helping hand with these gifts.

Handmade Baskets
Beautiful baskets catch household objects and help a busy parent maintain a sense of control. From the tiny, beautiful Indonesian baskets decorated with shells ($6.95) to the black and natural raffia and banana fiber lace bowl ($29.95) made in Uganda, your gift catches compliments and clutter. Produced under Fair Trade conditions, these products support many communities through health care programs, education, and fair wages.

Gift: Indonesian and Ugandan Baskets
Cost: $6.95-$29.95
Where to Buy: World Of Good

A Green Clean
When queried, 4 out of 5 busy parents said they wanted someone to clean their house the way they'd like to if they had the time. (The fifth wanted cashmere socks.) Do an internet search for your local non-toxic, ecologically minded housecleaners; it's a growing field. In NYC, Zen Home Cleaning has a four hour introductory cleaning at $30 per hour, while Craiglist has listings for earth-friendly house cleaning in nearly every city.

Gift: Eco-house Cleaning
Cost: About $30/ hour
Where to Buy: Zen Home Cleaning or Craigslist

Peaceful, Easy Feeling
The End-of-the-Day, 10-Minutes-of-Peace Chillout will be made so much better by The Club Organic Lounge Chair, an attractive, modern lounger made with an organic hemp cover, organic cotton batting and natural latex foam. The frames are crafted from sustainably harvested American hardwoods, so parents can have peace of mind with their rare moment of tranquility.

Gift: The Club Organic Lounge Chair
Cost: Chair $2,900.00, Ottoman $1,000
Where to Buy: Dax Stores

A Little Head Space
One thing that is not helpful to a busy parent is being told to slow down, find time to relax, meditate. Who has the time? This is the first book that honors the fact that most parents are, yes, TOO BUSY to stop and think. Thornton knows they're not going to actually read it with full attention, so he includes Try It Now tips and memory devices to hook them.

Gift: Meditation in a New York Minute: Super Calm for the Super Busy, by Mark Thornton
Cost: $12.95

Love the Green Gift Guide
by IanTurvill on December 4, 2006 - 10:54pm

I love your online green gift guide "Giving Gone Green".

In fact, I love it so much, I've added it as the featured article on my blog at: http://healthygreenblog.typepad.com.

As I noted in my posting, what is particularly appealing about your collection of green gifts is that they have segmented it according to the recipient's potential attitudes towards "things green".

Where else could one find in a single place gifts for the "Eco-Slacker", "The Style Maven", or "The Foodie", plus many others?

Nice job, Lime Team.

If you're into natural and alternative fiber clothing, check out Doie Designs (www.doiedesigns.com) fabulous collection of silk and bamboo women's wear. It's a new company, but quickly growing. The clothes are high quality, stylish and comfortable, plus they won't break your budget. I've been surprised by the absence of mention in all the press surrounding green apparel companies this year! The designer was actually featured on Lime.com several months ago

Happy holidays,

Has anyone tried one of these? I saw this on HGTV awhile ago and have really really wanted one. I am a poor social worker though, so I have been hesitant to spend that much money. Anyone have experience using one of these?

Never too late to be a novice
by feebe3 on September 8, 2007 - 2:32pm
I've just started recycling with all of my heart, but I'm finding it a bit difficult. My local community's recycling flyer has a lot of items missing from it that I though were recyclable. Anyone know of a really good book or article on this website that will help kick-start my all-over the home recycling efforts?

I love the guide and I had
by johannabartley on December 15, 2008 - 9:31am
I love the guide and I had no idea there are so many green practical things. There should be more baby gifts in there as children should learn from a small age that we need to take care of mother nature.

These would make great
by gordman on January 13, 2009 - 2:46pm

These would make great promotional products for special events, you don't always go for pens and tshirts because people are always interested in challenging new desings. This article just gave me a great idea.
