Cat Litter That Won't Give You Pause

If I wax poetic about how my cat litter smells like Christmas, would you think I was nuts? I have a very sensitive nose, and with two feline beasties I am forever battling that Two Cat House Smell. I can’t stand the heavy perfumes in most litters, and my cats have let me know in their own catty ways that they hate it too. And I don’t like the idea of using strip-mined clay litter from China that goes right into the landfill. So I am always trying something new – wheat litter, orange peel litter, newspaper litter. I am usually left sadly disappointed; scoop in hand, sticky, stinky mess in litter box.

Frustrated and embarrassed as a 1950’s housewife, I turned to the internet, googled “best cat litter odor control” and found something I hadn’t seen before. Odor Lockers cat litter – The Ultimate In Odor Control, Flushable and Earth Friendly too. I wrote to the company to find out where it is sold, and found it in the local megasupermarket. Hopeful, but prepared for disappointment, I poured the litter into my cats’ freshly scrubbed box and was immediately impressed. Where other litters send up plumes of dust, Odor Lockers was almost dust-free. I never believe any litter’s claims of no-tracking, and Odor Lockers doesn’t make this promise. In fact, on the curiously witty website it states that “Honestly, there is no litter in the world that doesn't track. It's just a fact of cat-owning life. The reason that Odor Lockers® is better than other litters when it comes to tracking is that our EcoGranules™ are bigger so they don't spread around as easily or as far, and they're far easier to vacuum up. Other litter, especially those new silica gels, crystals and pearls, track like crazy.” You said it, witty website writer!

Now let’s talk about EcoGranules. That’s what sets Odor Lockers apart from other litters. The small, rounded pellet is made from wood waste. Industrial wood pallets and wood dust from the furniture industry are usually deposited into landfills, taking up millions of tons of space. Using this waste wood at its core, EcoGranules are coated with deodorizers, antimicrobials and a “natural mineral coating” (read “clay”) to create a litter that absorbs cat urine and really locks in odors. The website assures that Odor Lockers is manufactured through environmentally responsible methods. The clay is white bentonite, quarry mined in Wyoming. The clay component isn’t ideal, but weighing the cost of clay mining against dwindling landfill space, the advantages of recycling wood waste and creating jobs in the US, and the superior effectiveness, I feel like it’s a decent alternative to imported clay or ineffective recycled corn cobs.

Odor Lockers is flushable, keeping the product completely out of the garbage cycle. The manufacturer recommends flushing just two clumps at a time, but I’m a rebel. Plus, with two cats that would take me a considerable amount of time and water. You should experiment, and know your plumbing before you go clogging up your pipes with too many clumps. My powerful pipes allow me to divide one day’s waste into two flushes, waiting a few minutes for each batch to break down before flushing.

So, the real test – how does it work for Pee Wee and El Gato Secreto, International Spy? These six-year-old boy cats are tough on litter. They dig, bury, scratch, reorganize, redecorate and, when their business is finally done, shoot out of the litter box like a cat out of H-E-double toothpicks, trailing litter all over the house. But the truth is, Odor Lockers does track less, and though some dust is kicked up when scooping I don’t feel like I should be grabbing for the dust mask. I also don’t have to hold my nose. Odor Lockers really does absorb the cat pee smell. My cats turn their tails at heavily perfumed litters, but had no problem with this. The light scent smells a little like pine, from the recycled wood, and a little bit like Avon Bayberry Christmas candle scent of my youth. Evocativeness is not a requirement of my cat litter, but it’s kind of nice to reflect on holidays past when doing a decidedly dirty job.

a non-clay, also flushable, good litter
by Anonymous on September 26, 2006 - 10:47am

i have SIX (count them, and then commit me) cats and i use something formidably called "world's best cat litter".  it is.  it is made from whole corn, is entirely flushable, and clumps.  it was recommended to me by two separate vets -- one recommending it for kittens because the clumps dissolve and therefore don't threaten the health of kittens (which a normal clumping litter DOES when kittens ingest small amounts -- it can clog their intestines and kill them), and one recommending it when i had an older cat irradiated for thyroid disease, since he was mildly radioactive for a while and landfilling the litter is not a good idea.   although this stuff is not cheap, it really does the trick on handling odor. i scoop out each littler box twice a day and my house stays odor free.

Flushable is not a choice

While I agree with much of what was stated above (Love the "World's Best litter) please, please, please do not flush your litter.  If you must, please only flush urine.  Toxoplasmosis is released when we flush cat poop - causing havoc in marine environments.  For those who live near the California coast, the sea otter population has been decimated by toxoplasmosis contamination from all of us flushing cat litter.

Indoor cats OK

I recently heard about this, and found out that indoor cats (which mine are) pose no toxoplasmosis threat.  But owners with cats that have outdoor access should not use flushable litter.  I use Odor Lockers even when I don't flush - sometimes I worry about the water usage.  So many issues!

cat door
by Anonymous on October 23, 2006 - 1:07pm
I have one irrascible male cat who has torn up the house if confined (took out a heater vent cover and seperated the heat tubing in order to get out.  He uses a cat box perfectly well, it's just determination to get out.  He has had a cat door for the last 8 or 9 years.  I no longer have to clean a cat box.  The cat door has not had to be replaced so no recycling problem; no litter in my sewer lines, no litter in the landfill, no toxic dust in my lungs.  I do live 7 miles outside of town, but we can't all have all the advantages  : )

Worlds Best Litter
by lisebeals on January 10, 2007 - 3:48pm

I also use the World's Best Litter in those bright yellow bags. We switched to it when I had a kitty with kidney failure (bless his little kitty soul, but he kept *eating* the litter!). It's well worth the cost. We now have 6 indoor-only kitties, also, including 2 older kittens. With all my allergies to dust, I always had a hard time with the dust litter kicked up (not to mention the smell and hating to think all that litter from 3 boxes was going straight to the landfill). Since changing to World's Best, I have not had a single problem. Low, if any, dust. No smell. We scoop 3 boxes, once a day and never have that "cat box smell". In fact, most people are amazed when we tell them we 6 completely indoor cats cause they don't smell anything. We have a one level house, so we don't have a different floor to find the boxes on. Happy cats, happy owners, happy guests.

A good hint for those using scoop litter and don't want to trudge to the garbage every day: use a diaper pail. We set a Diaper Champ ($30 at Babies R Us...and uses regular kitchen trash bags, not some special bag system!!) next to the boxes. Just scoop the poop into the top, flip the handle and viola! Gone. Then we're not wasting water flushing the toilet 5-6 times or more.

I might have to check out the article's recommendation. Might be another good backup option. Never seen it anywhere around here in our stores (whole food stores, or regular ones).

Fat Cat
by silentnight on June 6, 2007 - 1:30pm
My Moms cat is this big fat cat that smells and just sheds all over the place. He is a cute one, but the cuteness doesn’t make up for the smell. I use all different kinds of litter an odor remover. It works every once in a while. After reading this article I now have some new information I can use and look for in the kitty litter. Hopefully, it will make things better with the fat cat. Thanks again so much.

Finnegan doing his duty!

Thank you so much for doing the research for this product. I'm going out to get it today. My cat, Finnegan, has allergies, so the perfumes and dust really make him suffer! I think this may make a difference. I'll keep you informed! =^.^=
