Wouldn’t it be nice to have an at-a-glance reference guide to top 100 companies with the world’s best environmental strategies, so that when you hit a gas station, run to the grocery store, buy a car, or choose your investments you can do so with a clean, green conscience? You’re in luck, according to Greenbiz.com.
The environmental group Ceres, which has been tracking corporate environmental performance for nearly a decade, has put together the first-ever ranking of the top 100 companies on climate change strategies. It profiles 76 U.S. companies and 24 non-U.S. companies in 10 business sectors, including oil and gas, metals, electricity, automobiles, and chemicals.
Topping the list are BP (formerly known as British Petroleum, but recently reborn as "Beyond Petroleum"), the chemical company DuPont, and the Japanese car maker Toyota. Laggards include Exxon and Nissan. The study found that while some industrial behemoths such as General Electric are catching up with these pioneers, “others are still largely ignoring the climate issue with 'business as usual' strategies that may be putting their companies and shareholders at risk.”
