Let's say you're buying a bottle of wine, but can't decide between a Californian chardonnay and an Australian sauvignon blanc. Both are in the same price range, highly recommended, but one has a little green logo on it – an “e” growing off a leafy stem that signifies “made with certified renewable energy.” That would make the decision for you, right? The Green-e Product Labeling Initiative hopes so.

Green-e has become the gold standard in certifying the use of renewable energy in product manufacturing. The mission of its labeling initiative is to grow awareness around clean electricity use and build demand for it “by getting in front of millions of Americans through the consumer products they purchase and use every day.”

Here are some early adopters that have been awarded the Green-e logo: Steamboat Ski & Resort is using renewable electricity to power its lifts. Interface is purchasing green energy for its largescale carpet- and fabric-manufacturing facilities, and plans to be powered 100% by renewable sources by 2020. Lundberg Family Farms is using renewable-electricity coupons to offset the energy used to make its ubiquitous rice products. Andrew Lane Winery is using solar power to make their reputed Gamay Noir. Harris Ranch in Nappa Valley has purchased wind credits to offset 100 percent of the energy consumption of their Olive Oil bottling facility. And those delicious Santa Cruz organic juices are also made with home-grown power.
