Americans, it turns out, aren’t the only ones turning their backs on the theory of evolution. The BBC reported that in the U.K. – Darwin’s own backyard – less than half the population believes in evolution. In a poll conducted for the BBC, more than 40% of people surveyed said they thought creationism or intelligent design – creationism flimsily disguised as something vaguely scientific – should be taught in school science courses.

Still, the way the poll was formulated allowed respondents to select among three options to be taught in school, which were not mutually exclusive. Nearly 70% of those polled said they thought evolution should be taught in science class. And the trend against evolution in the U.K. could be waning: the BBC reported that people over 55 were more likely to reject evolution.

In a poll of Americans by the Pew Research Center back in August, 64% said they wanted creationism taught in schools alongside evolution. Just under half believed humans had “evolved” over time, but only 26% thought it was due to natural selection; 18% said it was at the hand of a “supreme being.”
