The world uses between 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags a year, and wrapping-happy Japan is a major player, consuming some 30 billion—about 300 for each adult. Environmentalists say the packaging creates a mountain of plastic waste that fouls the air, pollutes the oceans, and contributes to global warming.
This town is awful about the bag usage. Every deli tries to double bag everything and they're of the frame of mind that EVERYTHING needs a bag. If I order a coffee it often gets bagged. (WHAT??? What would I want it in a bag for?)
I was at the grocery store last week and the bagger tried to put a gallon of milk in a bag. It was the only thing I bought. I told him I didn't need a bag and he laughed, assuming I was making some weird joke.
"No," I said, "I live right around the corner. I don't need a bag."
He looked at me baffled. "How will you carry it?" he asked.
We've got to change the way we (don't) think about waste like this.
...If for no other reason, the area under my kitchen sink is crowded with bags. I most likely will not be able to use them all.
keep plastic bags out of stores.
