The Brick Testament is a version of the Bible—illustrated entirely in three dimensional scenes, rendered with Legos, and then photographed—meticulously constructed by a tireless artist known as the Rev. Brendan Powell Smith. Rolling Stone called his work The Passion in Plastic. And it’s a decidely provocative exploration of the text. Smith’s latest installment is a scene-by-scene depiction of the Book of Judges, which includes the gang rape (Judges 19:25) and dismemberment (Judges 19:29) of a concubine. The East Bay Express decribes the effect like this:

“It's surprisingly moving when rendered in uncompromising shiny plastic, the blocky yellow concubine distinguishable only by her molded pageboy hairstyle from the two assailants between whom she lies pinned as others watch and wait on the pegged surface, stock-still.”

Despite the endemic sex and violence in the text, which Smith exhuberantly details, Christians are often his biggest fans, according to the East Bay Express:

Nearly all responses to Smith’s work, even from the devout, have been positive. He hears nearly every day from ministers and Sunday-school teachers asking permission to use his images in their lessons. They “seem to really like that it’s accurate to Scripture and yet presented with a sense of humor,” he says. The handful of negative responses are “from people who are upset that I don’t shy away from depicting the sex in the Bible.” Oddly enough, “No one has ever complained to me about the far more prevalent depictions of violence.”
