Picture in your mind’s eye a violent alien creature. Odds are quite high that this image is in no small way shaped by the visionary surrealist painter and sculpter, H.R. Giger. His unmistakably strange and futuristic style was most popularly exhibited in the horrific, Oscar-winning film Alien. The Alien was his creation. Through this, he forever altered science fiction and permanently etched this creature into our collective imagination.
But this same permanence cannot be ascribed to the sculpture sitting just outside of Giger’s museum in Gruyéres. Ostensibly beckoning visitors to enter the museum and explore his works of art, officials of the town, famous for its cheese, argue that the piece doesn’t jive with the village’s quaint decor.
