Today Of The Dead

Today’s a big day. Although Halloween is possibly a more popular holiday, today may be a more festive and ethereal day worldwide.

In Mexico and the Philippines, today is celebrated as Dia De Muerto, Day of the Dead, wherein the lives of ancestors are honored. On this day, the spirits of the deceased visit us in the waking, living world. (Maybe the ancestors can be accessed by Google-ing aspects of our own DNA, or maybe the interface between the living and the dead is experienced using a more traditional, ghoulish interface.)

Catholics celebrate today as All Saints Day. Tomorrow the rest of the (faithfully departed) souls are honored during All Souls Day.

Today also heralds the beginning of Diwali in India, a joyful five-day festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs.

Today is also a new moon.
