The Canadian Edmonton Journal reports upon the return of Calgary priest, Father Emanuel Buttigieg, from the world’s only formal school for exorcists. Buttigieg was one of 120 priests attending the four month-long course “Exorcism and the Prayer of Liberation” held at the Vatican.

“It’s not something we want to advertise, but it’s something we have to deal with sometimes,” confessed Pastor Ray Matheson of Calgary’s First Alliance Church to the Journal. Anglican Father Douglas Skoyles, who dubs the role “spiritual garbage man”, says he has treated three or four cases of possession per year for the past dozen years.

“You tell it where to go, you bind it there in the name of Jesus Christ, and then you go home and drink your tea,” describes Skoyles.

Angelic and diabolic beings, spirit possession, and the power ritual and of belief systems in healing are also mentioned. But most details are left obscured:

I’m not really interested in doing an in-depth interview on the subject of exorcism, as the devil likes to be an object of curiosity and sensationalism, and I don’t want to give him any more attention than he deserves. Our focus is on Jesus, not the devil,” Bishop Fred Henry said in a prepared statement.
