Deadline Draws Near For Trans Fats

Maybe it’s time to revise the old adage, “all things in moderation,” because there are some things that apparently just aren’t good for you at all, even in modest quantities.

Artery-clogging trans fatty acids, aka partially hydrogenated oil, may sound like a lot of gobbledygook to you, but if you eat a lot of processed foods this cheap form of fat could cost you dearly. The National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine announced three years ago that there was no safe level of trans fat in the average diet.

But if you’ve been blissfully unaware of your trans fat consumption, you’re in for a rude awakening come January 1st, when the FDA will require food manufacturers to list the amount of trans fats contained in their products.

Companies like Kraft, FritoLay and ConAgra are scrambling to reformulate their foods and find alternatives to trans-fats to spare their chips and cookies the stigma of the trans-fat label.

A healthier Oreo has been particularly elusive for Kraft; the company’s been struggling to reduce the trans fat in its famous cookie without sacrificing the “mouth feel” that makes Oreos taste so good. A serving of three Oreos currently contains 2.5 grams of trans fat.

Kraft’s promised to produce a trans fat free version by January, containing canola and palm oils instead, but will the taste and texture be compromised? I applaud Kraft’s intentions, but I’m going to stick with Newman’s Own Newman O’s. They taste great, they’re organic, they’re trans fat free, and when I buy them, the profits go to charity. A chocolate cookie filled with cream and good intentions? How doubly delicious.

I love those Newman O’s! They’re amazing. I also recommend his peach salsa, but I have to preface that recommendation by admitting that I am, by all accounts, a spicy food weenie, so if you like it hot, ignore me.

Our family tried newman o’s after switching to a mainly additive free diet ( feingold.org ). They are delicious and they even have a gluten free one I buy once in a while for myself. Not only are trans fat’s bad for you but petroloeum based dyes and preservatives such as BHT and BHA (which is banned in England now by the way) contribute to many problems from ADHD, migranes, and fatigue to cancer. The FDA regulates how much of these substances can be added too foods, but your average Joe or Jane Doe I doubt thinks about how much they are eating.
