its all about the balance

on black friday, i was approached at a local department store by a group who was "educating" people on how to be a better shopper, look for fair trade and sustainable goods, etc, all of which i completely agree with.

They were activistic and were yelling at people for coming out early to try to get deals from a large conglomerate. They were really focusing on the "guilt factor" of their message. When they came towards myself and my friends, they were really preaching and were trying to make us all feel bad for being there.

So, I thought i needed to speak up and say that I believe in everything they say, but that currently since its pretty expensive to buy "green" for everyone, that i was at the sale to get some things at a deep discount so i could afford to buy other things that i knew were sustainable and be able to have gifts for everyone on my list.

They meant well with their message, but i think it really was the wrong way to deliver it. If I wasnt already open to their message, I would have been sooo turned off by their tactics. Anyone else feel like this?

Yes just need to shop around and get those bargains!  Or another good idea -- recycle -- recycle items you have at home to give as gifts.

Excellent idea! I like to make gifts too! People really love to receive items that have thought and energy behind it. I know I don't enjoy getting something that I know took a whole 5 minutes to pick out, no matter how great the deal was!

I say, I'm going to give gifts AFTER the holidays, just so that I can rob all those conglomerates of their bulging pre-holiday pocketbooks!
