It's not actually green, but it might as well be. Gary Null's Nutritious Chocolate [1] is packed with more vegetables than a health food salad bar. Sure, it also contains sugar and cocoa (both organic [1], of course), but they are quickly followed by a shocking list of ingredients that includes alfalfa leaf, oat grass, broccoli, parsley, and kale.
Kale?
I couldn't resist throwing a bar into my basket during the latest visit to my local natural foods store. Upon ripping open the wrapper, I discovered that it looks like chocolate and smells like chocolate, but would it taste like a spinach smoothie?
Thankfully, no. While the texture is more dry and crumbly than your average Hershey [2] bar, it tasted, well, like chocolate. I found that the challenge was not in enjoying the candy, but in deciding if it was indeed candy. To fully appreciate the eating experience, I would need to know if Nutritious Chocolate was a treat with which I was rewarding myself, or a health food that would enhance my health and longevity.
I never did decide and half of Gary Null's chocolate bar is still in my cabinet next to a bag of real chocolate chips.
Not sure why you should eat Nutritious Chocolate? Garry Null has an entire list of reasons [3].
