It's easy to look back and focus on mistakes we've made in our careers, but instead of spending time regretting past decisions, consciously decide to make sure you're learning lessons from past actions so you don't make the same mistakes twice. Remember: regret is pain relived instead of pain relieved.
Napoleon Hill, author of the best-selling book "Think and Grow Rich," wrote about a businessman who bought a plot of land and gold drilling machinery. After drilling for nearly a decade without any sign of gold, he sold his land and drilling machinery to a junk man, who dug a mere three feet deeper and found a treasure trove of gold.
This businessman could have easily slunk into a downward spiral of regret. Instead, thereafter, every time this businessman was ready to give up on a business opportunity, he'd repeat his own tailor-made mantra: "Just three more feet to go, just three more feet to go, just three more feet to go." Eventually he made millions in a variety of other business ventures.
The lesson to be learned: To err is human. To learn the lesson and venture forward smarter and feistier than ever creates superhuman results.
