Remember BenGay? [1] There was a time when the cool, tingly ointment was the only way to quickly relieve the tenderness associated with sore muscles. But BenGay is completely synthetic — check out Skin Deep's breakdown of the salve's toxicity [2]. Though methyl salicylate [3], the chief ingredient in the BenGay, is naturally found in Sweet Birch (a.k.a. Black Birch) [4] and wintergreen [5], massive manufacturer Pfizer [6] still synthesizes it.
Today, there are a handful of natural ointments that treat sore muscles, tender bruises, and various joint ailments. Arnica [7] is the primary ingredient in most of these salves. The plant is prized for it's anti-inflammatory and pain reducing qualities.
The folks at Ideal Bite [8] recommend the following natural salves:

- Weleda Arnica Ointment: [10] treat bruises, sprains, sore and aching muscles.
