Turkey Day Quiz

Nearly everyone I know has very definitive ideas about the Thanksgiving menu, and what should or should NOT be served. My husband and I, for instance, are simpatico in many ways, but radical opposites when it comes to the cornbread-vs.-white bread stuffing debate. This issue is sure to come up in a couple of weeks when we head to my mom's, because the Turkey Day dinner that I grew up eating is vastly different from the one that Chip grew up eating. Not better or worse — just different.

In light of this spirit of friendly disagreement that will likely ensue across the country over the next few weeks as people prepare to bring friends or partners home for the holiday, I've put together a Thanksgiving Day quiz. Take this with your significant other, friends and co-workers and see just how alike you really are.

1. Before the big dinner you should:
a.    Starve yourself all day in preparation for a gut-bursting feast
b.    Serve a fun breakfast for visiting family members, and snack all day as you're preparing the meal

2. The children's table:
a.    Is a great way for the grown-ups to enjoy their meal without mopping up spilled sippy cups and averting food fights
b.    Is a dreaded tradition for the lone 16-year-old grandkid who has to entertain a passel of 8-year-old cousins

3. Real stuffing must be made with:
a.    Cornbread
b.    White bread

4. Vegetarians at the table should:
a.    Make a meal of all the side dishes

c.    Only good if made with fresh green beans, a homemade mushroom veloute and shallots that I've fried myself.

7. The best cranberry sauce:
a.    Comes in a can and should be served as an intact cylinder
b.    Is a homemade cranberry compote with walnuts
c.    There's no such thing — it is gross and unnecessary

8. Dinner should be served:
a.    Early. After all, you need time to digest, and to get hungry for late-night leftovers
b.    At the normal dinnertime
c.    When it's convenient to watching the football game

9. Let's talk pie. Your dessert plate contains:
a.    Pumpkin pie
b.    Pecan pie
c.    Mincemeat pie
d.    A little of each, of course!

10. Whose responsibility is it to do the dishes?
a.    Mom's. After all, she was the one who made the mess!
b.    Husbands, sons and other grateful male family members
c.    The 16-year-old who had to entertain the gaggle of 8-year-old cousins
