Ozone [1] is a major component of air pollution. It’s caused by a reaction between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic [1] compounds that are emitted by power plants, factories, and motor vehicles. According to a new study [2] funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, there are no safe levels of ozone.
The study, which was also funded by the Centers for Disease Control, found that even at the ozone levels considered acceptable by the EPA, there was an increased risk of death from the pollutant. Ozone can contribute to asthma and emphysema, and causes lung inflamation. The EPA is considering whether to lower its acceptable standards for ozone pollution.
So-called “good ozone” occurs naturally [3] in the stratosphere – the famous ozone layer that protects us from UV radiation and is broken down by CFCs and other man-made chemicals. But closer to Earth, ozone is a pollutant.
