Lavender oil can be used for first aid to disinfect, reduce inflammation and treat a variety of common ailments, including everything from sunburn to insect bites and stings, tension headaches, pain relief and minor burns. It has long been used as a folk remedy to soothe frayed nerves and treat stress-related conditions, such as upset stomach and tension headaches. For bites and stings clean and dry the affected area. Then apply a few drops of oil directly to the bite or sting. For sunburn or sunstroke dilute 10 drops of lavender oil in 25 mL of carrier oil (olive oil, sunflower or jojoba oil) and apply topically to the affected area. Lavender is one of the only essential oils that can safely be applied to the skin without first diluting it in a carrier oil. Note: Lavender oil should never be swallowed or ingested.
Tea Tree Oil has antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal properties. It is well-suited for wounds, insect bites, rashes and for cleansing purposes. However, Tea Tree is a potent essential oil, so you want to dilute it before applying it to the skin area.
Goldenseal is effective against a variety of microbial infections, as well as stings, bites, cuts and scrapes. The powder has antiseptic properties and can be sprinkled onto cuts or wounds to stop bleeding or bites to stop itching. It can also be taken in pill or capsule form for traveler's diarrhea. Note: Goldenseal is on the United Plant Savers "At Risk" List, so only buy a brand that has been organically grown. Avoid goldenseal if you have kidney disease, glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or if you are pregnant.
Repellants:
Essential oils (lavender, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, cedarwood, lemon grass) suspended in a base of water and alcohol, are pleasant smelling to humans and noxious to bugs. The combinations work better than the single oils. Make your own or use the all-natural commercial preparations. Note that eating sugar and sweets increases your attractiveness to many insects!
Teas have been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, from fevers, coughs and nausea to congestion and constipation. Splash some mint tea on your skin to repel ants and ticks. Chamomile tea is another option. Steep 2 tablespoons of chamomile blossoms in 8 ounces of water, let cool, strain and splash on your skin before going out.
