This winter my attention was on energy bills and I had quite a lot of success.  In the coldest month, my gas bill was $300 less than any of my neighbors.

Here's what I do -

  • Heat vents are closed and rooms not in use are shut off.  A rug at the bottom of the doorway traps the cold inside.
  • Inexpensive window shades are installed.  They are drawn according to the sun's rays.
  • At night all shades are pulled down to shut out the cold.
  • During the day, when the sun hits certain windows, shades go up.  Where the sun never touches the windows, the shades stay down.

During the day, the furnace never runs because the heat in the house rises to around 75 degrees, which accounts for the grand decrease in the gas bill.  The electric bill dropped too because the the furnace doesn't turn on nearly so often.

The downside?  My cats are a bit confused because they are limited to fewer windows to see the wildlife outside!
