LIME Media is a unique media consultancy, representing the best of health, wellness and philanthropy sites for sponsorships and custom digital programs that focus on social media engagement. The popular Care2.com and Causes on Facebook are just two of the 50+ sites within the sought-after network.
Causes on Facebook, co-created by Facebook alum Sean Parker (Plaxo, Napster) is currently one of the largest applications operating within the massive social networking site, with Causes reaching more than 70 million registered users. LIME Media recently launched a never-before-seen program with Causes on Facebook, on behalf of insurance giant and loyal LIME Media client, Aflac. Aflac contributed a million dollars to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, making it the single largest donation made through a social networking platform to date.
LIME saw Causes on Facebook as the perfect pairing for the Aflac campaign. "You don't see companies making million dollar donations every day," said Chris Miglino, LIME Media CEO. "We knew we had to use their generous gift to literally inspire thousands of people to take action and spread the word to their friends. Causes is the only vehicle for effectively launching a microphilanthropy movement that's completely designed around the Facebook experience."
Aflac is donating one dollar for every person who joins the cause and will match donations from now through the end of September or until they reach their million dollar goal. Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos kicked off the campaign with a personal donation of $100,000 and challenged others to contribute to the fight against childhood cancer. The response to Aflac's campaign has been overwhelming, with letters of praise penned to Aflac's Amos directly and countless others expressing gratitude for the support that's been shown by Aflac for those battling childhood cancers.
Within seven days of the campaign, Aflac had recruited more than 350,000 people to join the cause and raised more than $500,00 for the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation. Aflac has also received more than 5 million organic impressions and is expected to receive close to 10 million by the close of the three-week campaign.
The Aflac campaign, like recent Target, Snickers, Microsoft and Kellogg's campaigns, leverages the power of social media to not only mobilize personal relationships to create positive change, but acts as a platform for companies and brands to communicate with consumers about their commitments to philanthropy. For many brands, Causes has been their entry point into social media marketing. Aligning with a cause that is close to the mission of the brand and important to their loyal consumers has been a true win/win. Causes looks forward to launching half a dozen more programs, each with their own unique experience, in the weeks to come.
