There's nothing like starting the day with a frothy, pale green glass of Juvo. Billed as a "natural raw meal," the individual packets of freeze-dried powder are just that. The clearly defined ingredient list — the most mysterious item is codonopsis lanceolata or bonnet bellflower — reads like a stroll through a superstar Japanese garden. Along with organic pumpkin, kale, and NON-GMO black soybean, are lotus root, burdock, brown seaweed, and reishi mushroom (among others).
Developed by oncologist Dr. James Hwang, as another method of stimulating a regenerative response in the human body, Juvo may also prevent heart disease, control weight gain, and manage diabetes.
I crack open a packet of Juvo as often as possible — unfortunately not every day as it's slightly cost prohibitive at $2.99 per serving — because it is an entire salad in less than 10 sips. I know of no other way to ingest a day's worth of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in under five minutes.
The taste? Surprisingly good. Juvo's greens are balanced out by brown rice, buckwheat, millet, and barely (all freeze dried and powdered) which lends the concoction a sweet, grainy back note that works especially well with almond milk. The powder can be combined with the liquid of your choice — soymilk, water, or juice also work well.
There are many other green powders available today, like Miracle Greens and and Gary Null's Greens and Grains, but they all fall short of Juvo's Asian-oriented list of ingredients. How many green powders feature burdock and laver (a type of red algae)?
Cost: $2.99 per individual packet.
Where to buy: At health food stores across the country and GoJuvo.
