The benefits of fall spices extend past the Thanksgiving table. The season's flavors — including cinnamon, ginger, annatto, turmeric, paprika, saffron and chili powder — may also prevent and heal a handful of ailments.

Ayurvedic medicine uses these spices to create heat from the inside out. Stimulating the agni, or inner fire, helps maintain healthy digestion and overall health.

Turmeric is the celebrity spice of the moment, with reports linking it to the prevention of cancer and Alzheimer's, while ginger is already famous for its anti-nausea qualities.

Need a quick fix of autumn spice? Curry powder is a blend of turmeric, cardamom, coriander, cumin, fenugreek, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.
