It looks like women who are struggling with high blood pressure can keep their morning cup, but should lose their cola habit. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have found that though both drinks contain caffeine, coffee lovers were at no greater risk for hypertension than those who abstained (study participants were monitored for 12 years).
There's more good news. Female coffee aficionados – the serious drinkers, at four or more cups a day—may actually have less of a chance of developing high blood pressure than those who rarely indulge. The benefits may be due to the high level of antioxidants in coffee.
The study, published in today's JAMA, linked cola to high blood pressure – see the AP's summary [via NY Times].
