For the nonsmokers of the world there is nothing more frustrating than being immersed in a cloud of somebody else's smoke. While states like New York and New Jersey have enacted no-smoking laws, they don't affect the smokers puffing away at that house party, or while waiting for the bus, or at the beach. Yuck.

While they're not as effective as say, sitting inside of a big, plastic bubble, the daily intake of certain supplements can help protect you from second-hand smoke.

  • Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects cell membranes and helps prevent the oxidation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
  • Water-soluble vitamin C also functions as a powerful antioxidant.
  • Selenium activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which helps the body eliminate smoke-associated toxins.
  • Carotenoids including beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein, and lycopene work together to act as an immune system booster.
  • CoQ10 a key role in cellular energy production and has antioxidant properties that help protect the body from free radicals.
