Antibacterial Soap: Can't Beat the Real Thing

Sometimes it’s best to stick with an old standby. As the winter season finally kicks in, it’s tempting to search for new and improved methods of preventing colds and flu. Well, antibactierial soap is not the answer.

Despite the prevalence of the “anitbacterial” label (from hand soap, to dishwashing soap to cleansing gels) the FDA has announced that antibactierial cleansing agents do not help to prevent colds and flu. In fact, an FDA advisory panel officially stated that good old soap and water are just as effective in preventing illness.

The FDA is also worried that the rampant use of the antibacterial soap may lead to additional strains of drug-resistant bacteria. There is currently talk of placing stricter regulations on the many products that boast antibacterial qualities.

Until then, I will rely on hot water and plenty of traditional soap to keep me healthy this winter.

Do you use antibacterial soap? Do you think it’s kept you healthy?

Purell

It’s not soap and it doesn’t replace soap & water to wash up, but I do carry Purell antibacterial sanitizer in my bag for subway rides. After seeing one too many people cough or scratch themselves then touch the pole or overhead bars, I always have it on me. I’m not sure if that helps me stay healthier, but it makes me FEEL cleaner.
