Could Nerve Snipping Spur Weight Loss?

An old ulcer operation is getting new attention as a possible alternative obesity surgery: a quick snip of a nerve that helps control hunger.

Also called Vagotomy this could lead to other complications. As it’s the only nerve that starts in the brainstem  down below the head, to the abdomen and regulates emotional stress. A plain Vagotomy is a very destructive procedure, since all the parasympathetic supply from the stomach to the left side of the transverse colon relies on the vagus nerves. Sounds risky not as much as gastric bypass. But a snipping of the nerve sounds a little extreme to me.

Do Not Go Gentle into This Plight

 I had stomach cancer six years ago, and, of course, my surgeon had to sever my vagus nerve.  As far as losing weight is concerned, it worked, this severing; I went from 260 to 135 in those six years.

 

However, severing the vagus also stops one's stomach from churning as well as reducing gastric secretions, both of which delay digestion and can cause nausea very frequently because of the undigested food.  I never eat a meal without experiencing stomach discomfort, including GURD because part of my esophagus was removed, also.  Although the weight loss is great, the side effects have been most uncomfortable.

 Having cancer necessitated severing my vagus, but don't do it hastily.  The side effects are not good.  True, I never get hungry, but because of that, I have gotten close malnourishment.  Walk carefully into this

I strongly believe that surgery, especially one as dangerous as this one, should only be performed when it's completely necessary. Besides I've read and noticed that it's hardly effective long term and a mere "quick fix". It's better to lose the weight gradually with better techniques that require much more dedication and discipline, methods that lead towards a life long change.
