Is the Carbon Neutral Trend Tapping into Peoples Guilt?
Posted by Vicki_R on March 8, 2007 - 12:02pm.
The new oxford dictionary declared "carbon neutral" its "word of the year for 2006" for inclusion in its 2007 edition.  Is this movement a scam or is carbon offsetting better than doing nothing?  Does carbon offsetting give people the mistaken impression that they can keep on polluting or that such individual efforts can solve global warmig when much more is needed?

guilt is a good thing

I think it is a bit of a gimmick, but it also has its merrits.  If you can help offset your carbon emission just a little by contributing to a better cause, go right ahead.  At least you are trying to make a difference.  Sometimes guilt is a good thing.

dfending your home

Recently I just read about John Edwards defending his home by contributing to causes to offset the running of such a large house.  Should he have to defend himself and is that important to know in a political candidate?

Carbon credits vs. indulgences
by SirTravers on March 25, 2007 - 10:25pm

I personally think the Carbon credits will go the way of indugences. You can pollute or sin as long as you pay up to clear your concience? I guess I'm more into fixing the problem myself so I see results. I cannot abide just throwing money to someone and saying fix the problem for me please.

Observe the world as though you were a child and enjoy the wonder of it all.

doing both can only help

I can't but think that that may be true, but at least it is better than doing nothing.  I have seriously thought about contributing to offset some of my carbon usages even though I am trying to help solve the problem. Working it from both sides can only help.

You've got to balance it all

As much as I agree that carbon offsetting/credits, can be an easy out, they are still of benefit.

For example; I try to reduce my own carbon footprint as much as I can, but to completely cut off my personal impact on this world, it's virtually impossible.

So at the end of the day although I do as much as I can, I take comfort in the fact that I can buy a carbon offset in order to do that much more, by funding an organization that is committed to finding alternatives and funding ways to reduce carbon emissions.

it's like recycling
by Vicki_R on April 9, 2007 - 6:09pm

I agree with you.  I too realize that I cannot eliminate certain things that contribute to carbon emissions and live my life.  So offsetting provides people like me an opportunity to try and make it better.

In a way it's like recycling.  We continue to read newspapers and magazines, drink from plastic and glass, yet we try and make things better by recycling.
