Gas that is Greener: Filling up at Burger King?
Posted by Vicki_R on February 5, 2007 - 10:35am.
Vegetable oil as diesel fuel?  I noticed a bus in the paper that was fueled by 100% vegetable oil.  I had never heard of that before, but thought it deserved some looking into.  Yes, it can be done with a little work.  There are some problems you need to overcome with regards to preparing your vehicle, but the more I read about it, the more it seemed like a possible alternative to petroleum.  It seems that vegetable oil provides other advantages as well.  Its might be better for your engine and might also be less likely to cause a fire or explosion in the case of an accident.  It also is supposed to give you equivalent fuel efficiency to petroleum based diesel fuel and is also lower in emmisions. Finally, vegetable oil is indefinitely renewable and it could be way cool to say you filled up at Burger King.  It makes me wonder what other alternative methods are out there.  I welcome anyone's thoughts on this or other ways to fill up.

Wow, I had never heard about it being less likely to catch fire in an accident. That is an interesting side benefit!

Well of course it won't catch fire. It's inflammable!

Right?

Smelling good

I wonder if another added benefit is the smell.  If when you fill up at it smells like french fries or onion rings? Really, though, it is something to think about.  It is just amazing how dangerous petroleum fuel is on all levels, from the emission gases to the carcinogens it gives off.   I just with it could be easier to make the change and actually use these innovative ideas.

Don't forget that there are still all kinds of carcinogens (mainly animal carcinogen acrylamide )in used vegetable oil, so we are not completely out of the woods if we went the bio-diesel route....but of course there are fewer carcinogens than your average barrel of oil

But then again....would love to have a car that smells like french fries! (Seriously)

Filtering
by Vicki_R on February 6, 2007 - 6:17pm
In one of the articles I read, it said that you would need to buy a filtering system that would clean and prepare the used vegetable oil for car usage.  I don't know if this would help to eliminate some of the carcinogens that are present in the oil or not.  By no means is this a perfect solution, but I thought it sounded interesting and the possibility of using oil that is just wasted was worth looking into.
