Cotton Tees-100% Not So Good
Posted by Vicki_R on February 4, 2007 - 1:13pm.
Clothes, particularly fast clothes that you discard easily without a second thought are a worsening source of carbon emissions that contribute to global warming because of how they are produced and cared for. It seems that synthetic fabrics (polyester) are better for the environment than those 100% cotton tees.  Synthetic fabrics require less hot water to wash and less ironing.  Tumble dryers require huge amounts of energy.  Most of us buy "natural fibers" like cotton believing that they are good for the environment.  While so-called organic cotton is exemplary in the way that it avoid pesticides, cotton gaments squander energy becase they must be washed frequently at high temperatures and generally require tumble-drying and ironing.  60 % of the carbon emissions generated by a simple cotton tee comes from 25 washes and machine dryings.  Polyester by contrast  used less energy.  To cut back of the use of carbons and make fashion truly sustainable, people will have to own less, to have less stuff.  Some manufacturers are trying to develop a technology that would treat cotton so that it did not absorb odors so easily and retailers are thinking about whether customers will be willing to change their buying habits to buy more sustainable garments and possible pay more for clothes.  Are you willing to make the change to buy and wear more efficient fabrics and would you become less fashionable to help save the world?

vanity VS responsibility

I buy ALL my Tshirts from:

http://www.sosfromtexas.com/index.htm

I wash them in cold, hang them to dry and wear them wrinkled ~ with a grin.  I really can't say enough good things about them.

Personally, I would rather wear a crumpled, reused paper bag with pride than high fashion, "low maintenence" fuglies any day of the week.

~ Greener today than I was yesterday!
