Keeping your 4th of July green.

I'm sure we're all excited for that day off on wednesday when we can assemble with our loved ones and have a fancy barbecue in our backyards. Like Vicki mentioned in her recent post is green the new red, white and blue? Whether I'm not sure if it is, or if it's not, I do know that it should be!

So what are we doing to keep our 4th of july green?

I did a little research because I want to stay creative and green on this day and I found some interesting gadgets. I particularly liked these cute solar star string lights, I know I'm going to need them because I don't plan on cutting my barbecue short. Among all the things I found I really liked these beer light glasses where you can enjoy your organic beer, or ... just regular beer, whatever. I don't drink beer, but I'm sure my uncles will love these.

There's still a few more days left, anyone have any other ideas? :)

No paper plates!

Not sure if we are going to have people over or go somewhere for the Fourth but one thing is for sure, I am not going to use paper plates. I don't use paper plates on a day-to-day basis but the Fourth of July is known for paper plate use. If we do go somewhere I'll just take an old Corelle plate that won't break and use it! People might think I'm a bit odd but maybe it will get them to stop and think about how much waste we generate, especially on a Holiday.

That's one thing I am doing to stay green on the Fourth, hopefully others will do similar things!

No paper for us either!

We are having both families and extended family for the 4th! I will be using the mis-matched dish I have be come famous for using. I know I will get the hit about saving water. My rebut is the following.

1. Styrofoam cups and plates can not be recycled, and take for ever to decompose in landfills. If ever!

2. I don’t have to buy them.

3. Water is recyclable.

I will also be using cloth napkins and table cloth. I will also be serving almost everything organic. The charcoal is an hard wood all natural and I will be using and electric starter.

Most of all I think the reason everyone is coming is to see just how Green I have gone. I can’t wait to here the reactions about the toilet tissue that is brown and comes from recycle paper. Have a happy 4th!

bamboo plates

I was in Smith and Hawkin and they carry bamboo plates.  Now that would really impress!  They look really nice to and aren't too expensive.  Nice touch for a party.

styrofoam dilemma

Cowboydavey brings up some good points. The use of styrofoam is  intense, especially during holidays! Whether you use it to send presents to your long distance family or to eat and drink from it!

Not too many comments
by Statuesqueone on July 7, 2007 - 2:09pm
We ended up going to my brother's house for a BBQ and I did take one of my old Corelle plates. Surprisingly I didn't get but one or two comments, but when I told them I was just trying to be environmentally conscientious they just said "Oh." I also used one of the regular forks in stead of th plastic ones provided. I'm sure that there was plenty of trash produced that day but I fee good that I didn't contribute!
