Hummers and Trucks and SUV's Oh! My!
Posted by Cowboydavey on June 22, 2007 - 10:25pm.
image Living in Texas and my Mother is from deep East Texas. I can remember going to see her family there. We would pass the oil pump jacks and the oil derricks, with the smell of crude perfuming the air.  Sky Chief was twenty-eight cents a gallon. We drove a land yacht, Ford  Edsel  1958 Bermuda Station wagon. It had AM radio and hang on air and three on the tree. "Standard shift on the steering column." Our family has always driven big cars. My Dad was a Ford man by religion. I say this because now I drive a small compact car and I love it! My next car will be a hybrid. "To bad someone killed the electric car!"  I travel in my work. about 2500 miles a month, and support the oil companies with my fuel dollars. I see Hummers, Pickup Trucks and SUV's by the herd. I have to ask myself "Why do we need these mother ships?" I ask a friend of mine that question. "Because we Americans are fat and need large vehicles' to hall our fat a** around!" Good answer! Not the one I was looking for. A Hummer is used by the military, pick ups are used by construction, delivery and farmers. SUV's are used by military and forest rangers. So way do we need these for everyday use?  To me, the it is the oil companies and the big three in bed together. In the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car?" I got a lot my answers. I would like to get other people input on this topic. Ask yourself this question; "Why do we need these vehicles?". Then go to the government web page and read about  what our government thinks about how to go GREEN. Please let me know what you think.

We don't NEED them

which is exactly why Americans want them.  And let me tell you something else by golly, if I had one it would dang sure be bigger than yours!

sometimes...
by livinforthecity on June 26, 2007 - 2:53pm
its true many of us dont need them. but there are instances where they do make sense, even for everyday life. I'm 6'5, my brother is 6'2-6'3 (still growing) and my dad is 6'6. when our old car broke down, my dad did everything he could to find a hybrid that could fit everyone in our family. unfortunately, after months of searching, he couldnt find a single hybrid that would be comfortable for us to fit into, so he had to settle on a reasonably fuel-efficient toyota minivan. we need the biggest cars on the road in order to feel comfortable. also, to play devil's advocate, people who are overweight or obese might need SUVs and trucks that'll carry their weight well. obviously being obese is a problem in itself, but that is a circumstance where i could see SUVs being possibly close to a necessity. or in mountainous terrain, like you said for the army or rescue teams or similar institutions

Toyota Highlander

My husband is 6'5 and he needs a large car like you.  I mentioned the ford escape and he said it wasn't made very well.  He said the Toyota Highlander was a better bet.

Oilfield roads
by SirTravers on June 27, 2007 - 9:33pm

Now to be fair I ride my motorcycle to work, and drive a Focus when it's one or two more people with me. My family is big enough that it justifies my owning a Suburban. I have been modifying it for better mileage as you can see in one of my other threads. Now you being around the oilfield you should know how awful the oilfield roads are. A lil car couldn't handle the daily rigors of driving 400 miles in offroad situations for sure. I can understand you scratching your head seeing just one or two people in a suburban, but they might be going to pick up a big load.

Even those of us in the oilfields know when to use what vehicle. We tend to park our trucks when possible. Hopefully they'll give us diesel electrics soon. That'll really help the mileage!

Observe the world as though you were a child and enjoy the wonder of it all.

I understand with family....
by Cowboydavey on June 28, 2007 - 6:17pm

I understand with a family. I drove the large station wagons for years. My main thing is if we are one of the most advanced country in the world, why are we not the leaders and not the followers.

During the oil shortage in the 70's my Dad said when they get the price of gas were they want it will stay there. So true. The Big Three are in trouble, and the foreign car maker are kicking their butts. The oil companies are at record profits. The say supply and demand. I say let us stop the demand and prices will come down. If we are going to have large vehicle, lets make themsuper efficient

Compact cars.
by madamerebellion on July 3, 2007 - 1:53pm

I suppose I see how tall people would feel more adequate in a bigger car. However, I still prefer a small cover a big one. They're more convenient overall and are generally better for the environment. Plus some extra cash from saving on gas every month won't discourage me.

But hey if people are going to purchase bigger cars, we should at the very least try and make them hybrids

They can put the seat back!
by Cowboydavey on July 3, 2007 - 4:49pm

I have a friend who is 6ft 4. He drive a Mini Cooper. He put the seat back all the way. His wife is 5ft 6 and their children are small. They have a rack on the top. I road with him once and had ask him about a bigger car. Bigger car, bigger money more carbon on the planet. Good point!

tax rebate
by Vicki_R on July 5, 2007 - 4:25pm
The tax rebate is also a good incentive for buying a hybrid. With that and the savings at the pump, it is definitely worth looking into for those of us that need more room. If you save a $100 or so a month on gas, that adds up at the end of a year.  Enough to justify the initial investment.

Safety is an issue
by Statuesqueone on July 10, 2007 - 10:31pm
My husband is 6 ft 6 and I am 6 ft even. I would be lying if I were to say that comfort isn't an issue for us when selecting a car but another reason is safety. If my husband is sandwiched in to the cabin of a small hybrid he is not going to be able to move as quickly in an emergency situation. Also he gets quite a bit of neck strain from having to bend over to see out of the windshield.

Hopefully the car manufacturers will take this into consideration as they continue to design more and more fuel efficient cars. Maybe make them with back seats only that my husband can drive from ;)

New Car
by Clementine16 on July 11, 2007 - 2:22pm
I am in the process of searching for a new car.  Right now I have a truck (gasp! - it's a very small truck - not one of the monsters that you sometimes see on the road) and have been researching some of the new hybrid models of cars.  I have found that they are now offering more sedans along with the compact cars.  They have more room and are also much better for the environment.  That was a main concern of mine - I want something that has room for others to fit comfortably and for myself to fit comfortably.

SUV and me
by blumerlgrl on July 21, 2007 - 6:21pm
I have listened to everyone's opinion and they are all good ones- for them. I do drive an SUV and I love it. I have horses and a horsetrailer and big dogs. I can't see lugging my family around in anything else. But for one thing I don't drive unless I have to. I'm not into burning up the rubber just to drive around and I contribute alot in many other areas to behave responsibly to our planet. So there is one reason from the other side.

$$$$$
by Vicki_R on July 22, 2007 - 7:04pm
I just back from a weekend trip and I must say, mu Explorer used up $100 just to get me there and back and now I need to fill up again.  That may be reason enough to look into a better alternative and invest in a Hybrid.
