Not Easy Selling Green
Posted by Vicki_R on June 13, 2007 - 1:26pm.

Would you buy a product, even if it was not the best out there, but it was green?  Experts, say no.  Many marketing experts say there is merit to marketing products for their environmental attributes, especially since going green has become such a hot trend, but consumers want a product that also makes good sense.  Would you forfeit quality if it was eco-friendly?

Not I.

I really wouldn't, because then I'd have to replace more often... so in the end it'd be almost the same and I would be unsatisfied.

I always try to research and compare, you have to make sure that you will be somewhat satisfied with the product, but also make the right decision for the environment as well.

pros and cons
by Harley on June 14, 2007 - 12:15pm
It depends.  I do buy green cleaning products and I really think they don't do the job as well as toxic cleaners, how could they, but I feel better using them.  So I am torn.  I think it depends on how much something costs and what are the ramifications if I don't use it.  I would have to weigh the pros and cons.

Quality VS Eco
by TheGreenQueen on June 14, 2007 - 3:51pm

I do like shopping for a bargain.  But when it comes to green and eco-friendly these days there is always a quality item.  You have to shop around.

I am very particular about cleaning products and my skin/body care products.  To me toxic is out clean and green is the only way to clean my home.  I feel the harsh chemicals are far too dangerous to risk my families health.

With skin/body care only the purest ingredients and when possible organic ingredients.  I like to nourish my skin from the inside out and the outside in.  How do chemials nourish my skin?

Have a green day!!!

agreed.

I do agree with you, but we really have to do our research to make sure that the product is in fact worth it. I have a lot of friends that just fall into buying anything as long as it claims to be organic.

For me eco-friendly = quality.  Period.

peace of mind
by Vicki_R on June 14, 2007 - 6:48pm
Peace of mind is worth a lot.  But having said that, I want my products to do what they are supposed to do.  I tend to think, that most green products are actually made with more TLC than there counterparts.  Fair trade and organic labels mean a lot to me.

trap
by Vicki_R on June 15, 2007 - 6:53pm
It's a hard trap not to fall into, buying things just because they are organic.  Organic products can contain sugar and just as many calories as non-organic products, bu they, it does make you feel better.

maybe
by dancingqueen on June 16, 2007 - 7:35pm
Maybe.  I probably would  buy a product if it was proven that the benefits of using it were better for the planet and still did the job it promised to do.  I tried a fluorescent light and really like the standard ones better, but I will forego the soft light because I know the benefits outweigh any issues I may have.

me too

I did the same with my lights as well.  I prefer the standard bulb lighting, but have started switiching because it is better.  The good news is that I think people who take the time to grow their own veggies and artisans who make beautiful organic products, often do a better job so we don't have to worry about quality.

Depends on the product
by Ecobabe on June 20, 2007 - 9:04pm
If the product was of an inferior quality but still did the job I more than likely would buy it. But if it was inferior, still did the job, but I had to use twice as much of it (example would be paper towels) probably not. Hopefully there would be a lot of thought that goes into buying green products. I would have to weigh the facts and, like Madamerebellion says, we need to do our research. I would hate to support a company that is putting out a green product just to make a buck and not caring whether they are giving the public a good product or not.

Caveat Emptor
by Harley on June 21, 2007 - 5:56pm
I would hate to think that people would be putting out products and calling them green just to make a green buck.  That would truly be going against what the green movement was all about.  But not everyone is as honorable as we would like.  You are right though.  Just because a product calls itself green it may not be.  Caveat Emptor-Buyer Beware!

maybe if it was a product or brand i know i could trust i know Ge "general electric"  is working on a few products that are suppose to be eco-friendly. Maybe if more major brands made the switch to support green it would motivate people to buy more eco friendly products.

Do your homework!

I must admit that some of the green cleaners and product take more work or more of it to get the job done. Not all green items are of quality. You have to know your stuff. I research a product on the web if I can. However, I am reverting back to what Grandma, my Mom and other used to clean. Part of me going Green is finding what works. I also find out how much $$$.  Green marketing is like everything else. You got the ones who care and those who want to make a buck. I will say since I have started using organic soaps in my laundry and dishwashing I do not have the itching that I had at times. I use a lot of vinegar and lemons. I got a lot of cleaning tips from Video Jug site. www.videojug.com Key in on the search cleaning.

at the movies
by Vicki_R on June 25, 2007 - 4:05pm
I was at the movies today and GE was advertising eco-friendly services like wind power.  I couldn't believe it, at the movies!!!  Green is really permeating every aspect of our lives.

gone mainstream
by dancingqueen on June 25, 2007 - 6:59pm
I used to think that whatever I bought at Whole Foods or an organic market had to be good or better than what I was buying already.  But now with all the greenwashing out there, you really have to read labels and research what you are purchasing.  Just because it has a picture of a cow eating grass or a sunshine, doesn't mean it really is good for us.  It's a shame that green has become mainstream.
