Are You Cruising Too Much?
Posted by Harley on May 10, 2007 - 11:20am.

Cruising for a parking space may be a huge contributor to the gas emissions contributing to global warming. When we drive around for parking spaces, we average a distance of a half a mile (about 2.5 times around the block). Even a small amount of cruising time for each car adds up to a lot of traffic and output of gas emissions. It seems that people don’t want to pay for parking in a garage. Should cities charge for curb parking and would that reduce the amount of cruising for a free space?

garages more accessable to drivers

It probably would help.  I know that I try and find curb parking when I drive into the city not to avoid paying a garage but because sometimes garages are hard to find.  Maybe they should be more accessable to drivers.

I always have trouble finding one too. The city should get more involved, because with little steps like these we're striving for a greener future eventhough we might not notice when looking at just one of these (almost microscopic) steps we're taking, when you view the whole picture, it adds up and suddenly you witness a big change.

Print out a map

I guess I'm not the typical guy. Before I venture into a town I get a Mapquest or Google Maps printout with as much pertinent info as possible. I've noticed that folks are starting to mark parking lots and garages for easy lookup. Also riding a motorcycle makes it more fun because many garages are not set up for bikes.

Observe the world as though you were a child and enjoy the wonder of it all.

now I will

It's not the fact that people not only don't know where they are going, it could be cruising around your childs school for a space or going shopping in your local town and waiting for a convenient one to open up.  I never really thought about how much I do cruise to make my life more convenient.  Now I will.

Little steps.

I too am guilty of searching for directions and jotting them down in my notepad everytime I go out to a new location. I figure that I can save gas, time and well, ultimately help the environment at least a little by doing so, call me compulsive or just weird, but I do this a lot.

But yes, definitely the idea of establishing more garages to park and discouraging drivers to park in curbs would in fact solve many issues. (congested streets near schools primarily)

Good topic though. I wonder if it could be possible to provide more garages free of charge,  that'd be the day.

curb parking with a fee
by Vicki_R on May 14, 2007 - 6:54pm
The article I was reading on this did not say anything about garages being free, just the opposite.  If everybody had to pay for curb parking, than they might be more apt to go directly to the garages.  I know that in my town, you cannot feed the meters, so I do park in the garages immediately.

I really just rather pay for a garage, it's safer anyway.

If I can make my life a little bit easier and help the planet at the same time, hey.

I am for it though, there should be a fee for curb parking.

feeding the meter

Cruising for a space can be so frustrating.  When I travel into a city, I always seek out some sort of parking lot or garage.  You are right about the safety issue and you don't have to rush back to feed your meter.

Why cruise?

I take a parking space at the edge of where all the other cars are parked. It's a time-saver, plus a great opportunity to walk.

It's similar to that tip to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

too much stress

It's a habit, but one I am trying to break.  Now I to just walk the extra distance and it's less of a headache.  Who needs the stress!

Exactly that`s why, in my

Exactly that`s why, in my opinion you should have your own garage. And I tried to do so for too long until I found a perfect contract with a Fort Worth Garage Door (http://www.fortworthgaragedoor.org)brand and they made my garage exactly as I required. I suggest you to do the same if you are experiecing the same problem as I did.
