Cruising for a parking space may be a huge contributor to the gas emissions contributing to global warming. When we drive around for parking spaces, we average a distance of a half a mile (about 2.5 times around the block). Even a small amount of cruising time for each car adds up to a lot of traffic and output of gas emissions. It seems that people don’t want to pay for parking in a garage. Should cities charge for curb parking and would that reduce the amount of cruising for a free space?
I guess I'm not the typical guy. Before I venture into a town I get a Mapquest or Google Maps printout with as much pertinent info as possible. I've noticed that folks are starting to mark parking lots and garages for easy lookup. Also riding a motorcycle makes it more fun because many garages are not set up for bikes.
Observe the world as though you were a child and enjoy the wonder of it all.
I too am guilty of searching for directions and jotting them down in my notepad everytime I go out to a new location. I figure that I can save gas, time and well, ultimately help the environment at least a little by doing so, call me compulsive or just weird, but I do this a lot.
But yes, definitely the idea of establishing more garages to park and discouraging drivers to park in curbs would in fact solve many issues. (congested streets near schools primarily)
Good topic though. I wonder if it could be possible to provide more garages free of charge, that'd be the day.
I really just rather pay for a garage, it's safer anyway.
If I can make my life a little bit easier and help the planet at the same time, hey.
I am for it though, there should be a fee for curb parking.
I take a parking space at the edge of where all the other cars are parked. It's a time-saver, plus a great opportunity to walk.
It's similar to that tip to take the stairs instead of the elevator.
