Meditation
Posted by Parachute on December 13, 2006 - 3:06pm.

I'm happy to say that I've already started working on better fitness and more organic/healthful eating.  I'm hoping to maintain these habits and to start meditating for a few minutes each morning and night.

It sounds crazy but meditation can be in the moments of down time while you are on the go... close your eyes in the back of cab and breathe deeply and focus on your breath. Resolutions are easier if we don't make it so daunting that we have to be in a quiet room with a silk meditation cushion for an hour!!

Mindfullness

I agree with you about taking the time in our everyday lives to unwind and relax.  I read a book call "The Full Catastrphie Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.  He describes a practice called "mindfullness meditaiton" which practices living in the moment and accept life "as it is". It is about being aware of our everyday moments, even if they are folding the laundry or being a stop sign while driving.  It has helped me to accept certain things and just try to enjoy things even when I am stressed out.

That is interesting. The concept of "Meditation" can be a little intimidating at times. It seems to have so much attached to it and it is easy to be too busy to deal with it. But I had a sweet hippie English teacher in high school who taught us about living in the moment completely. So instead of that rush of stress and thoughts flying, we would just clear our head and focus on all the sensations of what we were doing. Sometimes when I am waiting for my laundry to dry at the Laundromat or something I just try to really feel every part of my body one at a time, starting with each one of my toes. It is weird at first, but very relaxing after a while.

Living in the moment

Reply to VickiR - living in the moment is a great thing to practice, I take you back to your other post about resolutions and not keeping them.  If people would live in the moment and be mindfull and stop worrying about what kind of person they wish they were and accept life "as it is" then you as a person would feel better about yourself and not feel the need to change to societies perceptions.

Today's homepage

On today's LIME homepage, their was an article about yoga and the affects it may have in fighting memory loss.  I thought it was great that the medical community was starting to realize the benefits of yoga and acknowledge it as a potential way to fight dimentia and alzheimers. The power of mediation is awesome, if you can channel it right.  I have trouble sometimes doing that.  Check out the article.

That is one of the best posts I have read and whole-heartedly agree.  To practice mindfulness, you have to accept both the good and the bad and live in that moment.  I also think that we are so busy trying to improve ourselves that sometimes we let life pass us by.  It is hard accepting yourself and especially things you cannot change.  Living in the moment isn't always easy and sometimes is uncomfortable.
