Make a small change and buy a rainforest tree

I remember way back when in high school, we used to hold community events like raffles and cake sales, of which all the proceeds would be used to purchase plots of  rainforest covered land in Belize. Doing this is a little more costly, if you are an individual, so perhaps just buying one tree can help make a change.

Help save the rainforests one tree at a time.

Something Old

Trees have always been significant in the Jewish religion.  They actually have a holiday called Tu B'Shvat which means "New Year's for Trees."  People for years have been purchasing trees to be planted in Israel.  It has always been a nice way to help the environment and help to signify a milestone event in someones life.  I believe it can may a change and so do thousands of people already doing it.  Now, it is great that is has expanded beyond Israel to include the rainforest.  Sometimes we only have to look at back to see the future.

Just read this in today's NY Times.  Consumers need to continue and make the environment a priority.  It shows just what can happen when we apply pressure as a collective group.  We can all make a diffrence!!!Lets hope other buisinesses take up the cause too!!

Plant your own tree?
by SirTravers on February 18, 2007 - 3:13am

I remember when I was in scouts we used to plant conservation trees up in the mountains in Arkansas and Tennessee. I'm living on the Llano Estacado in southeast NEw Mexico now. The wind is always blowing here. Folks out here plant trees for windbreaks and shade. I got my kids to help me plant a silver maple two summers ago. With the waste water from my aquarium it has grown from 6 feet to 12 feet in that short time.

I'm not knocking buying up forest land, but I like to be a little more direct and make my own forest. Now if I could only talk my wife into getting those Lombardy Poplars....

Observe the world as though you were a child and enjoy the wonder of it all.

hands off

That sounds wonderful.  Friends of mine plant their x-mas tree and a few have planted trees like yourself.  Planting trees has become very fashionable lately to help people feel better about contributing to carbon emissions.  Many organizations are doing it, but it is really nice that you are teaching your children by example.  Hands off to you!

I'll save some trees. :)

Hi could you please give me some information on who I would contact to buy a plot of land?

I really think that I could organize something like that in my community and have people donate things for an auction.

Try these sites:

Here are a couple of sites in one form or another let you buy or sponsor plots of rainforest for conservation purposes:

Cool Earth

The National Arbor Day Foundation

Sometimes trying to get these plots of land on your own and not through an organization like those above can be difficult, but if there are other community members out there with more experience, they may be able to help you too.

Another alternative
by jamieo on July 20, 2007 - 1:07pm

Here's another alternative where you can save an acre of Rainforest for 50 UK pounds- about $102 US.  They have an option for 1/2 acre that's 1/2 the price.

http://www.worldlandtrust.org/supporting/donation.htm

CarbonNeutral.com also give you the option to dedicate trees in certain forests around the world.  If I remeber correctly, it costs about $15 US per tree or something like that.
