Day 15 of My No Meat Challenge
Posted by Monmac1 on August 7, 2007 - 4:00pm.

I have failed! I thought I could do it but my body just would not let me. I think it’s because I am anemic and I don’t know exactly what kind of diet I should be maintaining if I choose to become Vegetarian. I know some of you had suggested to tell my doctor about me making a change, but I have no doctor. I just moved here, I need to be here 6 Months to get approved for Health Care in California. I only slipped up once, I felt horrible afterwards, but my body kind of felt a little rejuvenated. I am going to continue on my 30 Day no Meat Challenge but maybe now I can just count that one time I messed up as just a mess up, I get a redo, sound good?

Doing great!

I think one mess up is no big deal in the grand scheme of things. You have gone 15 days and only had meat once, that's great!  This isn't an easy challenge that you have set up for yourself. Hopefully you are learning as much as possible from vegetarian web sites since you can't see a doctor yet. Also hoping that you bought a good iron supplement and multi-vitamin to help with the transition. Don't forget to eat beans and lots of spinach!

Keep it up and don't look back!

Cheer up!

Hey, say you went meatless for the 1st 14 of 15 days...that's 14 days of success!  I saw your previous post about not being able to have access to a lot of quality vegetarian/organic food and let me tell you, that can make all the difference in the world.  If you're not satisfied and maybe not fulfilling nutritional requirements, it's going to be tough.  But keep trying!  Once you find some good food sources and recipes you enjoy it will get easier.   I still have not made the complete jump, but it just so happens I end up going meatless maybe 3 or 4 days a week.... just because I found recipes that I truly enjoy.

Thank you so much!

Wow I will for sure have to get your input on things. I did try my hardest to get what I needed, but like I have mentioned before, it is very hard to find organic and just health foods in my area. Which really disappoints me, all I can do right now is keep doing what I can, with what I have. Once I find what I need to make up a good healthy lifestyle I am confident I will be able to maintain my new choice of living.

Don't give up! It takes will power, lots of will power and a true desire not to eat our four-legged friends. Your body will let you go vegetarian if you are good to it. Just make sure you take your vitamins, eat a variety of foods, and try new recipes from some of the vegetarian web sites. You can always substitute chunks of mushrooms or tofu for meat. And don't forget about Bocca burgers, they really can help you make it through the rough times.

You should take your iron supplement with orange juice, it helps it absorb better. I have been taking iron for years and I don't have a problem with it but it can be hard on the stomach so be cognizant of that. Also don't take calcium and iron at the same time, they compete for the same binding site. There's lots of rules to taking iron but it can be done effectively you just have to know the ins and outs.

being educated
by Vicki_R on August 11, 2007 - 1:15pm
Are you reading any magazines on being a vegetarian.  I would definitely google the topic and try to educate myself on what foods are rich in iron.  For instance, spinach and brocolli are wonderful and I would also go to a health store and speak with someone firsthand.  take the time to find out as much as you can and what products your body needs.
